More About Search Engine Optimization

When entering the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) there are a few things that will help you understand the nature of this new and growing industry.

What are your keywords?

Many people are pleased when they enter their business name into Google and find their site is # 1 but are disappointed with the amount of traffic that they are referred from the search engines. This achievement is only significant if a lot of people have already heard of their business name. What is more important is that a website can be found by people that have a need, but do not know which business can meet that need or where to find them.

A big part of any Search Engine Optimization project is to determine which keywords a target market will most likely use to search for their needs and then determining which of those search terms are attainable given the level of competition for the keywords within the search engine rankings.

How high do you have to go?

Keyword competition is an integral part of determining how challenging the task may be to get to the first page of the desired search terms. A carpet company may want to appear at the top of the search results for the term "carpet", but there are over 77,000,000 results for that term. Achieving a first page result could take many years and a lot of man hours.

On the first page of the search results for "carpet" there are several different types of sites: commercial carpet sales, a how-to site on how to install carpet, an encyclopedia site defining what carpet is, carpet retailers, carpet industry organization and carpet cleaning company. You have to think about the kind of traffic that you would drive to your site by appearing on the first page and whether it would be relevant enough that you could convert that traffic into sales $$. If you were to add qualifying terms to your keyword you would be more likely to get more qualified traffic. At the same time you would be narrowing down the degree of competition and gaining a more achievable SEO goal.

Challenges in the world of SEO

The world of SEO is always changing. The search engines continuously work to make their results the most relevant and are constantly changing the formula they use to determine which websites should be awarded top rankings. As a result, the SEO techniques that were used when your website was designed may be out of date.

For an SEO consultant, keeping informed with the most up to date information is key to delivering the desired results. However, the rules can change at any time erasing the value of past work. Though we can guarantee that we will work hard with the most up to date information available, we can not guarantee results. There are just too many unforeseen and uncontrollable variables in the SEO equation.
